Is Your CBD Safe?
Since the Farm Bill in 2018 federally legalized the production of hemp, the CBD industry has been flourishing. Producers have jumped at the chance to supply in a prosperous field, and consumers became eager to try a natural alternative. As expected, the industry has continued to grow but it seems that many suppliers have begun to cut corners on their product in order to minimize the cost of production. This has led to the spread of not safe CBD products, and consumers need to be on the lookout.

Many CBD Products Are Not Safe

CannaSafe Laboratories, a cannabis testing company in California, recently conducted a research study of 20 popular CBD products. This was done to see if brands are reporting accurate information on their labels. The analysis was blind, so the names of the manufacturers are not known. The findings of this study were startling. Out of the 20 products that were tested, only 3 had the same amount of CBD as claimed on the label. On top of misreporting the concentration, the study found that many of the products contained harmful contaminants. Some had gasses like ethylene oxide and ethanol, which can be damaging to the body when its heated and inhaled. The analysis also showed that some of the products contained alarmingly high levels of solvents that can become dangerous when vaporized or inhaled, as some products are intended for. Another study was conducted by researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University on CBD vapes from Diamond CBD. They found the compound 5F-ADB in four of the nine tested CBD e-liquids. This compound is typically found in synthetic marijuana products. It can make users psychoactive and has other negative side effects such as dizziness, vomiting, and convulsions. One of the nine products also contained dextromethorphan, an active ingredient in cough syrup that if often used to get intoxicated. High doses of dextromethorphan can be fatal.

How to Know You're Getting Safe CBD

Patients should proceed with caution when looking for a new CBD supplier. There are many reputable sources but beware of those that do not report much information and make miracle cure claims. It is easy to make sure you are getting safe CBD as long as you pay attention. Those who cut corners do so for the sake of your health and using these products can be detrimental to your health. Do not buy products from brands unless you feel certain that they are following quality practices.

Third-Party Lab Testing

There are certain things you can look out for to make sure you are buying from a quality brand. One of the most important things is that products are tested by a third-party agency. A certificate of analysis should be available for you to see the laboratory tested the amount of CBD (other cannabinoids too if applicable) and contaminants. Check the date of the certificate of analysis and make sure it is recent as well.

Dose Information

Another thing to look out for is that the product label provides dose information. Any product that does not come with instructions or a specific dose amount is most likely not a quality product.

Pricing

Does the price seem too good to be true? It probably is. Sellers who are able to put an extremely low price tag on products are most likely skimming on production costs. By not using standard practices, they are selling you an inferior product with little to no therapeutic benefits. Since it costs so little to produce these, they can sell it for a much cheaper price than quality, safe CBD.

THC Level

In the United States, industrial hemp is required to have under 0.3% THC to stay within the legal limit. In order to get any product with over 0.3% THC content, you have to be a medical marijuana patient. Do not buy any products claiming to have over 0.3% of THC. This is illegal and more than likely it is false advertisement.

Miracle Claims

Watch out for any product or brand that is making an outrageous miracle claim. CBD is a supplement that has shown to help alleviate symptoms of many different conditions, it is not a miracle treatment. CBD will not cure cancer. CBD supplements alone will not make you lose 20 pounds. Anyone claiming something different is most likely trying to sell a low-quality product as something that it is not.

Extraction Method Matters

Is Your CBD Safe?
Using a high-quality extract is the first step to creating a high-quality product. The most promising method of extracting CBD is through supercritical carbon dioxide. This CO2 method works by using carbon dioxide at a low temperature and high pressure to separate CBD oil from the hemp plant without disturbing purity and potency. As simple as it may sound, this is actually a quite complex procedure. This method ensures a pure result without any residue or contaminants. Using the CO2 method even kills any sort of pathogenic agent that may have been on the plant such as viruses, bacteria, and fungi. This guarantees that the final product is healthy and safe for consumer use. The CO2 also contributes to a better taste than other extraction methods since there's no need for harsh chemicals like butane or ethanol alcohol to be used. The FDA considers this a safe extraction method as well, which is why it is also used for fruit extracts and coffee.
